tools/ and tests/ are not in the package, so this release ships library
code identical to 1.3.1 byte for byte. Anyone who only uses the library
can skip it. Saying so up front is better than letting someone diff the
wheel and wonder what they missed.
What is in it: the retention script can now be told which table it may
delete from, and the Postgres tests no longer touch the table three
migration projects also write to.
The --table entry documents the failure it prevents rather than just
the flag. search_path starts with "$user", so the same command run as a
different role can resolve to a different table, and the script's own
printout of what it resolved lands in the same run as the DELETE.
providers.py had been holding two jobs: the registry of what each
provider looks like, and the decisions made from those declarations.
Adding response-side judgement would have made it the module for
everything about reasoning, so the decisions move to thinking.py and
the registry keeps only profiles and their lookup.
Moving a module breaks any deep-path import of what moved, so the six
public symbols are promoted to the package root at the same time. The
top level is this library's stated API surface; giving downstream a
stable name to import is what makes the next reorganisation harmless.
observe_thinking stays unexported — downstream reads the verdict off
LLMResponse, and exporting it would be a permanent promise for nothing.
client.telemetry_status exists so downstream can reconcile telemetry
programmatically, but annotating its return type meant reaching into
polygateway.types while the convention here is that the top-level
exports are the public API surface. The port itself stays unexported:
nobody outside the library implements it.
README first, since packaging freezes whatever it says at build time:
version pin bumped, and the capability table now mentions that an open
circuit can wait as well as fail fast. Verified the numeric claims by
measurement rather than memory -- record_llm_call still takes 24 fields,
schema.COLUMNS still has 24, meta still caps at 16 keys.
Dates the unreleased section as 1.2.3 (2026-08-19) and moves both version
strings from 1.2.1 in lockstep. The human picked a patch number knowing
this release carries five breaking changes; that is deliberate.
Two lines added to the upgrade hints: the install pin move, matching what
1.2.1 recorded for its own, and a pointer saying the zero-row RLS
self-check now also lives in the README, since CHANGELOG.md never reaches
anyone who only reads the packaged README.
Dating the changelog and bumping both version strings is the cheap half.
The README is the half that gets frozen into the sdist, so it is fixed
first: the install pin now names 1.2.1 (1.2.0 has no tenant dimension),
and the per-source FIELD table finally lists MISSING_DONE and EXTRA_BODY
- the latter was already referenced elsewhere in the same file. The same
table was missing QUOTA_FULL, the embedding-only keys, the memory cache
backend and three optional PGW_* keys; all are reconciled against
_SOURCE_FIELDS and _load_pgw rather than from memory.
Issue #10 Task 6. The install pin moves from ==1.1.* to >=1.2,<2 - left
alone, everyone following the README would have stayed silently on
1.1.2 without this fix and without a warning. Telemetry field count
re-measured via inspect.signature: still 22.
README first, per the release procedure: the 1.1.* pin still covers this
version, the 22-field count re-checked with inspect.signature, and the
telemetry row now states that an existing table needs no schema CREATE
privilege.
Patch rather than minor: the error surface is unchanged and no public
signature moved. What downstream must notice is timing, not types — the
worst-case call duration rises to roughly max_attempts * timeout_s now
that the retry budget actually applies.
Pre-release review caught an overreaching promise in the changelog entry:
the 429 bound holds only when the stall verdict can fire at all, i.e. when
the whole scope has no progress. The verdict is a conjunction, so a call
does not die while other calls in the scope are still producing — by
design — which leaves no hard per-call ceiling in that case. That property
predates this fix and is now stated with its precondition instead of as an
unconditional guarantee.
The wiki sync in the release checklist is a no-op again: the doc site has
been down since 2026-08-02 and its landing page names CHANGELOG.md as the
version source of truth, which this commit updates.
Minor rather than major: adding a parent class widens what an existing
`except` catches, it does not break one. Callers already catching
GovernanceBackendError keep working untouched.
The wiki sync in the release checklist is a no-op this time. The doc site
was taken down entirely on 2026-08-02 for accuracy reasons, and its
remaining landing page points at CHANGELOG.md as the version source of
truth, which this commit updates.
Pure addition ahead of the reparenting, so this commit leaves every
existing caller and test untouched.
SourceNotConfiguredError deliberately stays outside GatewayUnavailableError:
a source name that is not in the limiter's config dict is an assembly
defect, not a transient outage, and folding it into the retryable family
would let a typo retry forever without ever reaching a dead letter queue.
The retry_after_s default is 5.0 rather than 0 because a backlog released
at zero delay would stampede a backend that is already down.
The thinking matrix had been running inside make ci all along, which is
not what the design claimed. It takes seven minutes, spends 137 real
calls, and its criteria are statistical, so a network hiccup fails the
build for reasons unrelated to the change under test -- one run died on
three consecutive network errors exhausting the source.
The project already has the mechanism for this: the slow marker, which
addopts excludes by default and the config comments describe as "CI runs
it on demand". Marking the matrix slow brings make ci back down from
seven minutes to ninety seconds while the matrix stays a merge
requirement via -m slow.
The design also claimed e2e does not run in CI. It does: make test runs
pytest over tests/, e2e included, and the existing smoke tests really
call the gateway whenever .env has credentials. Only slow-marked tests
are excluded. Both documents now say so.
Version sources are pyproject and __init__; a test enforces they agree,
and it caught the second one being missed.
Patch level: no field or env key was removed or renamed, no port
signature moved, and the API stays backward compatible -- what changed
is the telemetry data contract, which the changelog spells out for
downstream cost rollups.
Round two of the from_env-only validation problem. Fifteen checks still lived
in the env parsing functions: six enum domains, the redis_url requirement for
redis-backed limiter/breaker/cache, cache namespace and TTL, telemetry path and
DSN, non-negative structured retries and non-blank scope. from_settings and
direct construction bypassed all of them.
The five asserts in client.py that claimed config had already validated
redis_url and the telemetry targets now hold on every path, so they revert to
what CLAUDE.md permits: internal invariant declarations that also narrow the
Optional for type checkers. Their comments now name the method that guarantees
them, since the previous wording is exactly what went stale.
Postgres DSNs built by hand now get the SQLAlchemy +driver suffix stripped the
way from_env has always stripped it, with a warning so the rewrite is not
silent. The env path strips earlier, so it stays quiet.
Patch release for the settings invariant fix. The changelog carries a separate
'behaviour tightening' section because a patch number gives downstreams no
warning that construction can now raise where it previously did not.
Includes config aggregation for multi-source env keys, from_env and
from_settings factories with explicit shared-backend injection,
gather_bounded, top-level exports, tightened import-linter layers with
the gate removed from the Makefile, and the finalized .env.example.
